Sony Will Set to Double Image Sensor Production

Sony Corporation plans to invest approximately 100 billion yen in Sony Semiconductor Kyushu Corporation's Nagasaki Technology Center ("Nagasaki TEC") in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2012, to increase the production capacity for CMOS image sensors..

Sony clearly expects the demand for smartphone cameras and digital cameras and camcorders to continue to grow rapidly throughout 2011. The consumer electronics giant will make use of Japanese government subsidies to assist environmentally friendly businesses.

Sony is the world's second largest digital camera maker behind Canon Inc and runs a mobile phone joint venture with Sweden's Ericsson.

The investment will bring its total production of image sensors, including CCD and CMOS types, to 50,000 units a month by March 2012.
